Step into the Water!
By Olufunso Joseph Omidiran www.livingsword.org
One of the keyword of the Lord that came to me for God’s children concerning this New Year 2013 went thus: “Don’t be afraid to step into the water! The sovereign Master is already there to carry you through. There will be supernatural surprise for those who take a step forward in faith and simple obedience to God.” As I was reading the Bible a short while ago, the Lord opened my eyes to a biblical scenario that lends credence to this instruction from the Holy Spirit. We are receiving a challenge from the Holy Spirit at this time to step forward boldly and confidently to do God’s express will. This shall surely come to pass in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Matthew 14:24-33
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 BUT WHEN HE SAW THE WIND BOISTEROUS, HE WAS AFRAID; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
The Scenario
Peter sees Jesus walking on the sea and asks permission from Him to come join Him in the stroll. The Lord gives him the permission to come and walk on the stormy sea and Peter goes ahead to do so. Shortly after, he looks away from Jesus, at the terrific wind and then BEGINS TO SINK. As soon has Peter loses his focus, he begins to sink. The whole event is in a brief moment. But the good news is that he cries out to the Lord for help and he is salvaged immediately. One begins to walk in failure and defeat when we cast our focus away from the Lord and we are enabled, helped to walk in victory when we look up to Jesus.
-Consider these related Scriptures: Hebrews 12:2; Numbers 21:8, 9; John 3:14, 15
-What can you see from the passages?
God’s instruction to us at this time is very clear─ don’t lose focus on Jesus, believe His word to you and follow His instruction all the way, even if it seems ridiculous or impracticable; it may seem to not line up with the common convention of men. Will you step into the water by faith and in obedience to the Lord? You will have the due reward if you do.
The good news again is that the Lord does not want us to sink in the water. He is willing and ready to hear our cry as we depend on Him, just as He did for Peter. He will pardon our weakness and failure if we re-trace our steps and take our focus back on Him. Yes, He will. Shalom.
